Apple might be working on a subscription service for games

It seems like Apple believes subscription services are the way forward, as it is reportedly developing yet another one for us all.

The company has reportedly held discussions with game developers about an upcoming gaming subscription service, according to Cheddar, which has accurately reported on unannounced products in the past, including the Facebook Portal long before it arrived. This new report claimed Apple’s service would be like a “Netflix for games”, allowing access to a bundle of games for a price.

We don’t yet know how much the subscription will cost, which games it will include, or even when it will launch. All we know is Apple began talking to game developers about the project in the second half of 2018. Keep in mind, however, that many of the games in the Apple App Stores are free-to-download – or freemium – titles with in-app purchases. It’ll be interesting to see if that changes.

Apple’s gaming service, which is in the early stages of development, could encourage developers to offer paid titles rather than freemium ones. Likewise, it could encourage users to actually pay for paid titles. Apple is even reportedly discussing partnering with developers as a publisher, which presumably means it would control the marketing, distribution, and so on for select games.

Earlier this week, evidence was found in an iOS beta suggesting Apple is also prepping a subscription service for news and magazines. It’s also expected to launch a subscription-based service for TV shows and movies, and may even decide to bundle the two services.

With iPhone sales stagnating, it’s clear the iPhone maker is looking into new ways to diversify its revenue sources and make more money.
