Huawei folding phone pictures hint at future design
Huawei is the latest company suspected to announce a foldable phone during Mobile World Congress at the end of February. The Chinese manufacturer joins Samsung, Motorola and Xiaomi, all of whom are rumoured to reveal foldable devices at the Barcelona show.
Huawei tweeted from its official UK twitter account claiming it would be “revealing the unprecedented at @MWCapital”, along with an image of what appears to be a folding phone and the date and time of its Barcelona press conference. We assume the MWCapital handle was supposed to refer to the MWC official handle, which is in fact @GSMA.
LetsGoDigital claimed Huawei’s foldable device would be available to buy around April or May. The site also published some renders of what it expects the Huawei foldable phone to look like.
It is not yet known what Huawei’s foldable phone will be called, though the company is said to have registered a number of trademark names including Mate Flex, Mate Flexi, Mate Fold and Mate F, so we can assume it will fall into the flagship Mate series at the very least.
In terms of specifications, it has been confirmed the Huawei foldable phone will be 5G enabled and it is expected to run on the Kirin 980 platform. We’d also expect some of the Mate 20 Pro features to be on board. According to reports, it is said the Huawei foldable phone will take the form of a tablet folding into a phone with the display on the outside – which the image in the Huawei tweet also suggests.
Samsung is reported to place the display on the inside, while Motorola is rumoured to be working on a foldable flip phone. It has also been claimed that Huawei could be looking to make the screen larger than Samsung.
Huawei has long been rumoured to be working on a foldable phone and it was claimed in July 2018 that it wanted to beat Samsung to the punch so it’s no surprise there is some competition in the spec department. It now appears that Huawei and Samsung will release foldable phones within a few days of each other however, assuming the rumours are true.
There is currently no word on pricing. Huawei will hold a press conference on 24 February, the day before MWC kicks off, where more information about its foldable device is expected to be revealed.
