LG working on a 100% full screen smartphone, no bezel at all

LG has filed a couple of patents for future smartphones with nigh-on 100 per cent screens and no bezel at all. The only element of the font of the designs that isn’t part of the display is a small cutout for the camera.

Filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office in its homeland, the patents show two different designs. The first is a solid, iPhone 5-style phone with rounded corners and a completely bezel-less display,

The second has a similar full screen display but is curved slightly on the right-hand side, to provide one tapered edge.

In both cases, a flexible display is used – OLED presumably considering this is one of LG’s main strengths.

The design patents were found by LetsGoDigital and published on 24 October and 2 November this year, so may have been submitted months or even a year or so ago. The placement of the front-facing camera is the only visible difference shown in each of the designs. Each has it left, centre and right respectively.

Of course, patents do not always make it to full consumer product, but these at least show that LG is keen on developing the current Holy Grail of smartphone design – the 100 per cent screen. We just don’t know when or if we might see the fruits of its labour.

We will, however, see its first foldable phone during CES 2019 in January, it is said.
