Spread the love

Following the recent news where UFO VPN exposed user data, including passwords, there are now 7 VPN services who did the same!

Last week, we reported that UFO VPN were caught exposing millions of users data, including emails, passwords, IP addresses and their activity. Today we find out there are a total of 7 VPN who did the same.

At the start of July, Comparitech found that Hong Kong-based VPN provider UFO VPN exposed personal user information like plain text passwords, VPN session secrets, IP addresses, connection timestamps, geo-tags, and device and OS characteristics.

The company was informed about the same and more than two weeks later, it reportedly fixed the issue, stating that no information was leaked. The leak affects both free and paid customers and reportedly all users of the service are potentially affected, taking the number to 20 million users. This amounts to 894GB of leaked data.

Since the news broke, there are now more VPN services that have also had their users data dumped online, which includes emails, passwords, IP addresses, activity and more!

VPN Mentor found that UFO VPN was not the only VPN service included in this scandal, but there are an additional six others that were seemingly connected to a common app developer and white labeled for other companies were found to be doing the same.

List of services involved

The total list of VPN services included in this scandal can be found below. So far, they are linked to a whitelabel VPN, there could be more that follow, but as it stands, the VPN services that exposed users data are;

  • Fast VPN
  • Free VPN
  • Super VPN
  • Flash VPN
  • Secure VPN
  • Rabbit VPN
  • UFO VPN

All the VPN’s mentioned above, claim to offer a ‘0 Log Policy’, yet all their user data was exposed, including activity totalling to a total of 1.2TB of data.

We are unsure at this stage if these data leaks are related to the recent change in China’s national security law that allows authorities to seize servers based in Hong Kong without a warrant.

What VPN services are safe to use?

With the recent news, we HIGHLY recommend avoiding Free VPNs. Top Tier VPN reported an article that provides insight into how they make money.

Free VPN’s collect data, sell data, are slow, and the majority are hosted on wordpress websites, which cannot guarantee anonymity.
